One of my favourite live albums: Johnny Cash, At Folsom Prison.
I've never heard an artist have such a rapport with their audience the way Johnny Cash does on this album.
Each track is wildly received by the crowd, who cheer and respond to each of Cash's witty remarks and observations. Cash has the inmates in the palm of his hands from the second he takes the stage, possibly because they're waiting for the prison's namesake song Folsom Prison Blues to play - Cash's signature track originally released in 1955, and the live version we all know coming from this album's recording.
Cash, the true showman, selected a track list he knew the crowd would resonate with, choosing songs relating to prison life, outlaws, and lawbreaking.
Highlights for me include Folsom Prison Blues, Busted, I Still Miss Someone, Cocaine Blues, and 25 Minutes To Go. The record also features cameos by fellow Sun Records alumni Carl Perkins and Cash's wife and recording parter June Carter.
This album is a piece of history that is a must for everyone's collection.
