💥SHREDDED DOES NOT EQUAL HAPPY💥
🦄In 2015 (left) I was at the peak of my competitive powerlifting career. I had totaled Elite several times over, set several records, and deadlifted 4x my body weight (535lbs at a body weight of 132lbs). I was working out a minimum of 12 hours/week, and spending a major portion of my life relentlessly focused on tracking every single calorie and protein going into my body. I was, in no uncertain terms, the most physically fit I've ever been in my entire life.
🦄Today (right), I'm no where close to that. I workout for 3-4hrs/week, loosely track my calories, regularly eat more than I "should" if I wanted to get leaner, and spend a hell of a lot more time doing things outside of the gym and kitchen (like building my biz, creating content, hosting seminars, traveling, coaching @garyvee, yada yada yada).
🦄I'm telling you this because Instagram is filled with fitness accounts showcasing shredded models and athletes with big smiles on their faces and a link to buy their newest workout or diet that "guarantees you get the same results."
🦄But what they don't show you is how fitness often takes over their life. How obsessive they get over their nutrition. How they won't go out to eat with friends/family bc they don't want to "ruin" their diet. How they can't miss a workout without feeling anxious & guilty. How they judge themselves & value their self worth based on how many "likes" they get on a shirtless selfie.
🦄Keep in mind, I'm not saying fitness *needs* to take over your life to get shredded. It doesn't. But staying shredded doesn't mean you'll be happy. And odds are if you aren't happy with who you are before getting shredded, you won't be happy with who you are once you are shredded.
🦄My point? Regardless of how low your body fat is or whether or not you can see your abs, do what makes you happy. Appreciate who you are and what you have to offer. Find out what's most important to you and go after it with everything you've got. Maybe you want to be shredded to bits. Or maybe you just want to lose some weight and feel/move better. There is no right or wrong. Do what feels best for YOU.

Throwing it back to my favorite "transformation" photo because I think it carries a massively important message. -- SCREW. THE. SCALE!!! -- I used to weigh myself every single morning, obsess over the numbers I saw, and measure my progress in jean sizes. Then I reached a point in my fitness journey where the number on the scale began to go back UP and so did my pant size. I felt beyond discouraged by this and assumed I must have been losing progress or going backwards. I decided to throw away my scale (LITERALLY), and began instead to measure my progress in other ways -- I took photos every couple of months. Recorded how many push-ups I could do and worked to beat my personal best, and most importantly LISTENED to my body and how I was feeling. The next time I stepped on a scale (three months later) I was shocked to see how much weight I had gained. Instead of feeling discouraged I was amused -- I had heard so many times not to focus on the scale, that muscle weighs more than fat per volume, a woman's weight fluctuates daily, etc, but I never fully believed it until that day when I first put these photos side by side last year. This helped it FINALLY click for me, and I hope it does for you too. I still am TWENTY pounds heavier than what I initially thought my "goal weight" should be, but I have never been healthier, or HAPPIER. Don't for one second let a number on a scale or pair of pants make you feel down on yourself. Measure your fitness goals through things like strength, endurance, health, and HAPPINESS. Move your body. Fuel it with the nutrients it needs. LOVE YOURSELF ALL ALONG THE WAY. #screwthescale
Clean eating. It's something my family strives for. It's something that's hard to do on the road. Hard to do if you're an emo eater such as yours truly. Hard to do when you're stressed. Hard to do when time feels tight. Hard to do when you're avoiding issues or tasks in your life. Hard to do when you're a cheese pull addict. My husband @matthewlud is much better at disciplined eating than I am. Whenever I don't feel well mentally, I eat badly. Which is to say as someone who has & does struggle, I know said struggle is real. I'm not a purist or an ascetic or into labels: I believe in birthday cake & love cheese. But that's not how I want to eat every day. I want to eat a vibrant, plant based diet as my norm because it's awesome for my body and the planet. If you feel the same way, I'm with you and excited to start sharing the strategies I've found that work + ways I avoid making choices I don't really want to make. Comfort food is fine occasionally and I still make it, baked goods too. But my strategy for making good choices is to make good choices effortless. Cooked grains and beans live in the fridge, homemade condiments of versatile awesomeness like vinaigrette and tahini sauce too, and I wash and chop veggies in weekly prep sessions and keep them stored in containers in the fridge. What are your strategies? Health food gurus please weigh in! So (I never do this, but...) this is me at 5'10.5/165lbs. It has been fairly difficult for me to get back to my daily workout regimen, but it's time to get serious. Dealing with depression/anxiety, rheumatoid arthritis, breastfeeding, being a mother of two and fiance to Mr. Needy (LOL)... The pressure to be level headed can be real (a real struggle). Getting out of bed is extremely difficult because of pain and being so exhausted, but at this point those are just excuses. I came up with a fitness plan/diet plan that fits my lifestyle and will be very consistent with it. I started yoga back up in early August, but I don't feel the same. Pre-pregnancy I was 148lbs, pre-birth I was 186 lbs, I left the hospital at 172lbs, lost about 10lbs (163 lbs) of water weight and back up a couple lbs because of my protein consumption and keeping a healthy diet for breastfeeding. I am not going go the supplement route, nor flat tummy teas. Just a simple life style change and it started Monday 10/16/17. I am still exhausted, but this is a long journey I am excited for. I will agree with most when they compliment me on looking good after giving birth to our 2nd child, but good isn't good enough. I want to look and feel GREAT! Goal set for 150 lbs/toned!! #Goal#SelfRewarding#HealthyLiving#DoItForYou#SelfLove#SelfMotivate#Month1
Does anybody else meal prep?? 🍓🍅🍎🌽🍏🍊 I swear it's one if the best things I've come across. I slave in the kitchen for about 1.5 hrs- cooking, baking, boiling, and chopping just once a week. Then it's Chef Mic and easy access to fruits & veggies for the rest of the week! I absolutely love it. 🤗🤗🤗 No cooking thru the week, no washing pots and pans, no grabbing for unhealthy snacks because I don't want to spend the time to cut fresh fruits and veggies. Everything is so easy!
Had 2 hard boiled eggs right after the gym (already peeled and ready to go). Had salmon with asparagus and corn on the cobb for dinner. Plain yogurt with fresh oranges, strawberries, and chocolate chips for dessert. Packed my lunch for tomorrow which is a loaded baked potato with chicken, bell peppers, tomatoes, and salsa. And I'll make my smoothie tomorrow morning- spinach, oranges, strawberries, banana, and apples. Yummmm!! 😋😋😋
Why settle for one when you can stack your favorite LoilJ diffuser bracelets together?⠀
