Hmong dress; detail. The white in this piece is created using beads made of grass seeds from the easily grown ‘Job’s Tears’ (English translation) found all over South East Asia. The fabric is handwoven, having been naturally dyed, and all the stitching is by hand. This image is a tiny detail of a complete outfit. The Hmong wear these as daily garb and keep one outfit always in which to be buried when the time comes. Both men and women wear this beautiful work. Don’t even start me on their silver jewellery and headdress ornamentation! Another time!
