Singer-songwriter #LauraNyro was born Laura Nigro on this day in 1947 in The Bronx. She was never a happy child so she created her own little world of music. Her mother and grandmother were progressive thinkers, so she was drawn to the revolutions of the 60s, which influenced her music. She sold her 1st song, #AndWhenIDie, to Peter, Paul, and Mary when she was just 18. She released her debut #LP, #MoreThanANewDiscovery, in 1967, the same year she made one of her only major live appearances, at the Monterey Pop Festival. She was publicity shy and very uncomfortable appearing on TV, which is why she remained a critical and musician’s darling more than a celebrity artist, just as she liked it. Many artists had hits with her songs in the late 60s and early 70s, notably #The5thDimension, who covered the delightful #WeddingBellBlues among others. Her musical style was a fusion of #TinPanAlley era pop, jazz, gospel, R&B, Broadway, rock, and blue-eyed soul and her lyrics are sharp, enigmatic, and confessional. Her influence on other musicians is widely acknowledged. #ToddRundgren said that he was so stymied the 1st time he heard Nyro that he stopped writing rock songs a la The Who and started emulating her. #EltonJohn said that he idolized her from the beginning of his career and that the audacity of her rhythmic and melody changes was like nothing before. Ovarian cancer took her in 1997, too young at 49, and remains one of the most ignored musical geniuses in recent history. The #AlbumOfTheDay is her 2nd LP, #EliAndTheThirteenthConfession (1968), which #PaulShaffer once picked as his sole #DesertIslandAlbum. It’s a brilliant collection of 13 opulently scored and multi-layered Nyro originals, bolstered by her big brash belting yet incandescent voice. The entire #album is simply outstanding, meditating on themes as vital as passion and death with a palpable sensuality and invigorating joyousness. Everything kills, but some featured highlights include the summery trip #StonedSoulPicnic, the staggering gospel-soul rocker #ElisComing, the doo-wop drinking song #SweetBlindness, the anguished protest blues joint #PovertyTrain, and the funky visceral lament #WomansBlues.
I can’t go through my current trip hop phase without acknowledging what is considered to be the first trip hop album and that is the debut album from Massive Attack titled Blue Lines released in 1991. First of all, this album was released way ahead of it’s time as it doesn’t sound like a record you’d expect from the early 90s. This album gives you a fusion of electronic music, hip hop, dub, soul, reggae incorporating break beats, sampling, and rapping. Three of the four singles releases feature Shara Nelson and they are Safe From Harm, Daydreaming, and Unfinished Sympathy which has been regarded as one of the best songs of all time. Unfinished Sympathy is a track where the strings escalate and the vocals succeed emotionally to create an iconic moment in music history! Final promotional singles Hymn of the Big Wheel feat Horace Andy & Neneh Cherry along with the single Be Thankful For What You’ve Got feat Tony Bryan also further established the unique sound Massive Attack introduced to the world! #MassiveAttack#BlueLines #1991 #SafeFromHarm#UnfinishedSympathy#Daydreaming#triphop#electronica#britmusic#music#album#albumoftheday#90smusic#insta90s#igers#igmusic#igdaily#tomrobs365albumsin2017#365project
