When you think of depression, you may be inclined to picture someone who struggles to get out of bed every morning and is barely able to function. But unlike many medical conditions, depression is one that often goes unseen and undiagnosed. That’s because many sufferers actually experience concealed or smiling depression, in which they put on a happy front while hiding the fact that they may be fighting inner demons and feelings of sadness #youwillbearwitness#erinfado#childhoodabuse#companiondog#therapydogs#therapydogs#Trauma#ptsd#ptsd#complexptsd

A few months ago I had the privilege of taking portraits of author and veteran Stéphane Grenier, for the cover of his book "After the War: Surviving PTSD and Changing Mental Health Culture" published by @uofr_press. His book will be available February 2018.
I needed to calm myself #panicattack
This is one of my go-to music fixes. 🎻🎼
I focus on the music…Make the beat(ing) in my head follow another rhythm… Live there for a few mins. Breathe. #musicsaves 🎶 @dameesco 🎻

No commands, no physical cues and no training. That’s right, no training. Severus has never been “taught” how to loose leash walk, adjust to my pace, stop when I stop etc. He never had to be taught, for the same reasons he’s never had to be taught how to share, never marked anything in his life, never humped a dog in his life nor humps people. Even as an intact male. Why? There’s a mutual respect, trust and understanding between us. I lead, he follows. We’ve never used a prong, an e collar, a head collar etc. No force. You don’t need to hurt or scare a dog to be the leader. Being a leader only requires you to be confident, assertive and lead by example. Being a leader also means meeting your dog’s needs and providing structure. Structured walks, feeding time, free time, sleep time etc. Structure doesn’t mean constant training or punishment. It’s like how you’d teach a child to eat their dinner at the dinner table not the floor, or not to leave a playground you’re letting them play at. It’s an understanding of certain rules or boundaries. All dogs should have rules and “morals” that they learn and follow in all of their lives. This creates a balanced, focused, respectful and naturally well behaved dog. The goal with any dog should be to achieve one that is well behaved AND well trained. That is our goal.
*Disclaimer: This does not mean Severus is perfect by any means. He makes mistakes, he acts like a puppy and he tests boundaries from time to time. No dog is perfect. But if your shoot for the moon you at least land among the stars✨
**Disclaimer: I didn’t mean to bash training tools, although it sounds that way lol. What I meant was more that you don’t need those tools when starting fresh (though I find them helpful in rehab cases) AND you don’t need to harm or scare your dog to be a leader. Those are two separate things!

Our mission behind our dog tags is to raise awareness and help veterans with #ptsd. The suicide rate amongst veterans is heart breaking! We need to take care of those who fought for us. 15% of each necklace sold will go to @mission_22
Very important and useful information.
This is research. Facts. Statistics. Not emotionally fuelled bullshit. When you accuse victims of being liars because you like the perpetrator, or the victim doesn’t act in the way YOU think they should... you’re not being reasonable. You’re not following logic and facts. You’re being emotional and very toxic.
YOU are then part of the problem. When a woman doesn’t come forward, when a rapist is free to rape again and again and again.. YOU contribute to that when you call victims liars/sluts/attention seekers.
Use not only your head, but your heart too.
This week’s #MilitaryMonday features Paws and Stripes. They are a local nonprofit located in New Mexico, setting up shelter dogs with veterans diagnosed with PTSD and/or TBI to become service dogs, at no cost to the veteran. #dogpeoplearecool
