QUESTION: Specifically for those of you working ladies + gents. What's the BIGGEST pain point in your life as it pertains to career or business? Not like, "I'd like to see this kind of info..." more like "I HATE this certain thing or I'm totally FAILING here, please send help!!"
I'm figuring out my editorial calendar for Q4 videos and I'm homing in on my Business + Work playlist. VERY few things get me as fired up as talking about business and I've got all sorts of advice, but I want to know what you really, actually need. Comment below and let me know and/or tag a friend in business who might have ideas for me!!
I first launched the #Hamilgown collection a year and a half ago, starting as just a photoshoot for what I imagined a Hamilton fashion line could be. I put together a lookbook and passed it to the backstage crew at @hamiltonmusical in NYC to put in Lin’s dressing room. It was a week before he left, and I was finally seeing the show. I wore Lafayette and my mom wore a Bluecoat tunic, and we both were stopped constantly at the show. So when I came home, I decided to open up for handmade orders on them. A wave of requests for the bluecoat came in, so I focused my energy on that piece. By the end of the year I had a small production run of them in stock, but stock only lasted for about three weeks before it sold out. So I moved on to other characters: Lafayette and A.Ham as those were my favorite pieces in the collection. But I still got email after email after DM after comment after tweet about the Bluecoat dress. When would more be made? Could they commission a one-off? Why wasn’t I doing more? They just discovered me and all they wanted was the Bluecoat.
I was all out of gold shank buttons. They had to be a specific size, and finding them was turning out to be a huge nightmare. I wasn’t about to sacrifice the design for an inferior button. So I retired it, thinking all was lost.
But then, a few months ago, I found the gold buttons again. My button warehouse is huge and seemingly endless, and I’ve explored it hundreds of times. But this time, there was a box on the floor in the metal button aisle, and it was filled with the gold shank buttons I needed. I pulled up the notes on my phone of the size, and they matched. So I bought every last button in that box and called my new factory, telling them I’d have a new piece for them to work on cause I needed a new sample made. And that’s where we are now: sample has been made, I love it, and now we can make more Bluecoat Tunics. So, don’t miss out this time. I don’t know when the buttons will find me again.
